High concentrations of sulfate have been documented in both the subsoil and groundwater in parts of western Sydney, especially near or close to creek lines (e.g., Kemps Creek, South Creek). High levels of sodium and magnesium sulfate have the potential to corrode concrete and metal structures used for building foundations and specialized concrete and engineering requirements may be required to mitigate the potential effects of salinity.

A salinity investigation may be required in low lying parts of Western Sydney (e.g., along South Creek) in the following instances:
When you are planning to develop land in an area that is known to be saline or mapped as having a salinity risk. This includes areas that are low lying, floodplains, or areas that have been cleared of native vegetation.
When you are planning to undertake works that could potentially increase salinity levels. This includes works such as earthworks, drainage, or water extraction.
